A few days ago, the U.S. semiconductor giant Texas Instruments (TI) abolished the chip design team located in Beijing, the team is mainly responsible for the more low-end power supply chip research and development, about 50 people.
The latest news, it is said that the company's office in Shenzhen will also have drastic personnel changes, including marketing, AE, design and other line related positions are in the scope of the abolition, about 20 people.
On the reasons for its adjustment, the above sources said it is a global departmental adjustment, the abolition of the product line in China and transferred to India, and this product line is still in the profitability of the department.
It is reported that TI is not the first time to make this adjustment. In November last year, TI withdrew the MCU team in China. The team's market and applications were left behind, RD was abandoned, and the original MCU product line all moved to India, all members of the team were dispersed to other product lines.
Industry insiders believe that the layoffs may be affected by the sluggish demand of the entire consumer side of the market on the one hand, and on the other hand by the power chip's involution, relationship and other factors.
Last month TI announced the fourth quarter 2023 financial results, in which revenue was $4.08 billion, down 10 per cent from the previous year, down 13 per cent year-on-year; net profit of $1.37 billion (earnings per share of $1.49), down 30 per cent year-on-year.
From the business point of view, analogue business revenue of $3.12 billion, down 12% year-on-year, but higher than the expected $3.07 billion; embedded processing business revenue of $752 million, down 10% year-on-year, much lower than the expected $828.6 million.
As an analogue chip giant, TI's guidance for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024 ($3.45-3.75 billion) is also significantly lower than the market's expectations (an average of $4.09 billion).
